The SAP DMO (Database Migration Option) toolset simplifies and dramatically streamlines the entire SAP migration with one process, one tool, one downtime. DMO allows SAP users to update an existing SAP system to a higher release version and/or can migrate to SAP HANA database. This blog post is a technical overview on all you need to know about DMO.
Benefits of DMO
DMO provides many benefits over other upgrade/migration options by combining ease of use, shortened number of steps, and additional tools for reducing downtime. Here's a quick overview of the many benefits of DMO.
Besides using the preconfigured reports that you can run in SAP BusinessObjects, you can also create ad-hoc reports to analyze the availability and performance of your applications in a way that suits your needs. To generate an ad-hoc report in the SAP BusinessObjects BI launch pad. Log on to the BI launch pad. From the Applications menu, select Web Intelligence Application.
- For example you want to build a Test system or you want to upgrade / migrate your SAP system to other platform. There are various methods to do that, one of which i'll explain here is using standard SAP R3load procedure. Using standard SAP Installation tool, you can do the following: 1. SAP Homogeneous System Copy.
- For UNIX: SAPCAR –xf //.SAR -R /usr/sap/. This command creates the directory SUM under the /usr/sap/ directory. You can also specify a directory other than /usr/sap/. In the following, the directory //SUM is referred to.
- UPDATED as of SUM SPS16. Always refer to the latest SUM guide from SAP. With the new SUM version (it was SPS16 when we are writing this article), there is a new method of starting up the SAP Software Update Manager (SUM). To get start, follow below steps. Our example below is based on Windows operating system.
- Migration steps are simplified
- Before DMO (Database Migration Option), you needed to update the SAP software with SUM (Software Update Manager), and then migrate it to a new database with SWPM (Software Provisioning Manager).
- DMO simplifies the migration with one tool (SUM with DMO) that will run the system update, Unicode conversion, and database migration combined into one tool
- If your systems weren't already Unicode, a Unicode conversion can be included (for single-code-page systems).
- A combined procedure only needs one maintenance phase (not two).
- Reduces business downtime (TCO)
- Less regression test necessary
- In place migration keeps the application server and System-ID stable.
- Low impact on system landscape, as only the database server is new
- Original database is kept and can be reactivated as a fallback
- Reduces risk
- No restore required
- More time for testing before cutover
- The tool is easy to work with, as it's just SUM with an improved UI (User Interface)
- As of SUM 1.0 SP 13, the benchmarking tool has been added for use as a technique to tune the migration and reduce the technical downtime.
- A certification is recommended, but is not required for consultants using DMO.
- No migration check service is required for DMO on productive systems.
Before you get started
Before beginning a DMO project, there are a few critical items you should know. With any SAP project, knowing how to navigate the tool and proper planning are the key to success. Here's a quick list of rules around DMO of SUM.
- DMO supports a migration to SAP HANA DB, as well as SAP ASE, MS SQL Server, and IBM DB2.
- A homogenous migration is not supported, for example HANA to HANA
- DMO can only be started for a maintenance
- You need to apply at least on SP, for example ST-PI
- SAP HANA requires a single stack.
- DMO only works for AS ABAP based systems: no dual-stack spit option in DMO.
- DMO keeps the application server and SID. No switch is possible.
- For a target system based on SAP Netweaver 7.5 (such as SAP ECC 6.0 EHP8), the source system must be on Unicode already. For this scenario, DMO is not able to cover the Unicode Conversion.
- Using DMO for a migration across data center is not supported. There are no technical restrictions, but it comes with a high performance and latency impact. You my use it at your own risk. No support is provided in case of performance issues or broken procedures due to network/latency issues
Supported SAP start releases for DMO
Currently, DMO does not cover all possible start releases, but it covers several popular versions. You'll want to verify your start release is supported before starting the project. The following are supported SAP instances for DMO:
- SAP R/3 4.6C – SAP ECC 6.0 (or above)
- SAP Business Suite 7 (or above)
- SAP BW 7.0 (or above)
- Sap Netweaver 7.0 systems (or above)
The following are the migration options for SAP HANA:
While SAP general migration option is to use DMO of SUM, it may not fit every company's needs. It could be the case that you want to move your application to a newer OS version, migrate it to a different location, or maybe your landscape just doesn't meet a requirement for DMO. Whatever reason it may be, it's important to know what options you have. Listed below are the current migration options supported by SAP.
New installation (using SWPM)
- Install a new system on SAP HANA
- Either without changing existing solutions
- Or for transforming an existing solution to SAP HANA by performing (selective) data migration
Classical migration (using SUM and SWPM)
- To bring original system on release supported by SAP HANA, you perform update/upgrade (if required)
- Then, you classically migrate your traditional database to SAP HANA
- Must pay for migration check service
- Must be certified
One-step procedure with DMO (using SUM)
- One process, one tool, one downtime.

Depending on your system and your hardware, this operation can take several hours. These background jobs are executed on the background server that is configured with the BATCH HOST parameter. The number of jobs is determined by the parameter MAX BATCH PROCESSES. It cannot be higher than nine or the number of background processes configured on the background server.

This phase displays all the repairs that are still in open transport requests. They are also written to the REPACHK2.LOG file.
Release these transport requests so that you can continue; otherwise, the objects contained in these repairs are locked. Note SUM checks in this phase also for inactive development objects.

This phase displays all the repairs and corrections that are not released and writes them to the REPACHK2.LOG file.

The runtime of the XPRA phase differs from one application component to another – however XPRAs are used by all SAP modules and applications.
The XPRA phase reports are run as one of the last steps of the upgrade. However, due to the fact that table content is adjusted, the XPRA phase needs to be done at application downtime. XPRA can also run as part of the activation of extension sets and IS add-ons.
All XPRAs are executed by a system job, named RDDEXECL Download roster for cricket 07.
Post processing
RUN_RSREGENLOD phase: In the Configuration roadmap step and Phase INITSUBST the Advanced preconfiguration mode and Expert option 03) – Generate ABAP loads on shadow system during uptime and start asynchronously in post downtime

Overview
The standard tablespace layout is described in the SAP Note 541542 and in the Online Help SAP Naming Conventions for Tablespaces and Data Files.
After update as a follow-up activity empty tablespaces can be deleted (Please follow the SUM guide Chapter Oracle/DB2: Deleting Tablespaces)

FAQ
CHK_POSTUP phase logfile LONGPOST.LOG:
You can solve some of the problems that occur during an update after you have completed the update. This type of problem is indicated by a P in the second column of the .ELG logs.
You can find a complete list of these P messages in the CHK_POSTUP phase in the LONGPOST.LOG file.
You have to usually remove the cause of these problems before you start using your SAP applications again.
Do I need to uninstall additional application server instances before update?
Uninstalling additional application server instances is only requested in exceptional cases. The SUM guide describes these specific cases:
Release upgrade only and for heterogeneous systems, that is, which have different operating systems on the primary and additional application server instances, you have to uninstall the additional application server instances before you start the upgrade procedure.

SHADOW_IMPORT_INC phase: The shadow import phases are run during the shadow instance. On these phases, data is imported on the shadow tables and on new tables.
The shadow import is a feature aimed to reduce the application downtime caused by the import of the Support Packages. The idea behind this feature is to import, activate and convert all objects belonging to the Support Packages into a shadow repository, and at the end of all phases, switch to the new coding. The import of these packages is performed via the transport tools tp and R3trans.
SHADOW_IMPORT* phases: data is imported on the shadow tables and on new tables
SHDUNINST_DB phase: SUM deletes the shadow schema DB user

EU_CLONE_MIG_DT_RUN phase: SUM migrates data from the source database to the target HANA database
JOB_RSVBCHCK_D phase: If there are any outstanding or incomplete updates, the update stops in phases JOB_RSVBCHCK2 (in Preprocessing roadmap) or in JOB_RSVBCHCK_D (Execution roadmap) with a message.
KX_SWITCH phase: SUM installs the standard instance target release kernel
MODPROF_TRANS or MODPROFP_UPG phase: SUM will modify the system profiles for the upgrade
MVNTAB_UPG phase: SUM Converts application views and activates remaining nametab entries

XPRAS_TRANS XPRAS_UPG and XPRAS_AIMMRG phases: XPRA or 'Report after Put' is an ABAP program or Function Module that is executed during a transport request import sequence, the import of a Support Package and during Upgrades/Enhancement Package installations.
The reports that are executed during XPRA are application-related conversions, adjustments, data mergers or alignments for the conversion of release-specific SAP-shipped customizing that need to be adjusted during the upgrade. The runtime of the XPRA phase differs from one application component to another – however XPRAs are used by all SAP modules and applications.
The XPRA phase reports are run as one of the last steps of the upgrade. However, due to the fact that table content is adjusted, the XPRA phase needs to be done at application downtime. XPRA can also run as part of the activation of extension sets and IS add-ons.
All XPRAs are executed by a system job, named RDDEXECL Download roster for cricket 07.
Post processing
RUN_RSREGENLOD phase: In the Configuration roadmap step and Phase INITSUBST the Advanced preconfiguration mode and Expert option 03) – Generate ABAP loads on shadow system during uptime and start asynchronously in post downtime

ISSUE 1: Hanging situation in the last roadmap step in SUM
Symptom
The upgrade executed by SUM tool has finished the postprocessing phase and it is running long time in the last roadmap step

Root cause
Insufficient memory for the SUM SL controller java process
Solution
Stop the SUM gui and server (SUM menue -Stop update) or by killing the running Sdtserver
command prompt/process
Make a backup copy from the batch file sdtexeDSUService.bat
Edit the file and increase the parameter value
set JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx1024m
to
set JAVA_OPTS=-Xmx2048m
Restart the SUM tool
Repeat the phase.

ISSUE 2: Old exchange tablespace is not empty after update
Overview
The standard tablespace layout is described in the SAP Note 541542 and in the Online Help SAP Naming Conventions for Tablespaces and Data Files.
After update as a follow-up activity empty tablespaces can be deleted (Please follow the SUM guide Chapter Oracle/DB2: Deleting Tablespaces)
In some cases the old exchange tablespace is not empty. In such case follow the troubleshooting and symptoms and solutions section.

FAQ
CHK_POSTUP phase logfile LONGPOST.LOG:
You can solve some of the problems that occur during an update after you have completed the update. This type of problem is indicated by a P in the second column of the .ELG logs.
You can find a complete list of these P messages in the CHK_POSTUP phase in the LONGPOST.LOG file.
You have to usually remove the cause of these problems before you start using your SAP applications again.
Do I need to uninstall additional application server instances before update?
Uninstalling additional application server instances is only requested in exceptional cases. The SUM guide describes these specific cases:
Release upgrade only and for heterogeneous systems, that is, which have different operating systems on the primary and additional application server instances, you have to uninstall the additional application server instances before you start the upgrade procedure.
Sap Sum Tool
Release upgrade only and if you are upgrading from a source release based on SAP NetWeaver 2004 and you have additional application server instances, back them up in case a system restore is required and then uninstall them.
To uninstall the additional application server instances, proceed as described in the installation guide for your source release. If you want to use the profiles of the additional application server instances to adapt the profiles of the target system, save them before you uninstall the additional application server instances.
Can I apply higher SP to only some of the components on my NetWeaver system?
Software Update Manager allows you to update the whole system to a higher support package stack using a stack xml file generated in SAP Solution Manager's Maintenance optimizer system – MOPZ. You can also update one or more software components to a higher patch (not support package) level using transaction SPAM for ABAP stack and ‘Manually prepared directory' option for JAVA stack (See SAP note 1641062 for more information).
Why are DDIC objects (tables, domains, etc.) displayed in SPAU?
All DDIC objects which were not adjusted in SPDD will be displayed in SPAU. Please make sure that all DDIC objects will be adjusted in SPDD phase to avoid data loss.
Note
Any time during the update procedure, you can increase or decrease the limits that have been specified for the different types of parallel processes.
For some phases, these changes will have an immediate effect.
For example, changing the values for R3trans processes during downtime will influence the phase TABIM_UPG immediately.
For other phases, you have to carry out the change before the corresponding phase is running. For example, the values for parallel background processes during uptime have to be set before the profiles for the shadow system are created and take effect.
